PORTLAND -- Fire crews rescued two people and their pets trapped under the Burnside Bridge Monday night. The man and woman were then arrested for trespassing.

Firefighters used a ladder to reach 21-year-old Jasighian Marie Baxter, who was stuck on a ledge under the bridge with two dogs and a cat. Crews then had to use a rope system to pull 23-year-old Robert Arland Morehouse out of the water below.

“These crews train on this kind of scenario frequently and it sounds like this one went without any problems,” said Lt. Rich Chatman of Portland Fire & Rescue.

Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson said the couple had scaled a 10-foot fence to get into a restricted area. They were each charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing. Their pets were taken into Multnomah County Animal Control custody.
