DEPOE BAY, Ore. – The captain of a fishing boat in Depoe Bay filmed from his boat as it was overtaken by a wave surge and nearly capsized Friday.
Surges in the area started around 9 a.m., and were fairly small and calm for the first few hours. But by 11, they became larger and more powerful.
As a wave surge tossed his boat up onto a dock, Roman Smolcic caught it all on video.
“The water just picked the boat up and I had it tied to the dock,” Smolcic said. “It just broke the cleats off the boat, snapped the lines and pushed it right into the pilings.”
Smolcic said he was sure he would have to swim back to shore, but the boat managed to keep from sinking.
