PORTLAND -- A Portland couple said a strange smell grounded their Spirit Airlines flight Tuesday night.
Curtis and Chelsea Waible were headed home from San Diego when they smelled lighter fluid coming from a vent above them.
The plane went back to the gate and a maintenance worker determined nothing was wrong. But the Waibles smelled it again.
“I looked over at my wife, who was in tears, and I was going to do whatever it took for us to get off the airplane,” Curtis said.
The Waibles voiced their concerns again and they and 10 other passengers were ordered off the flight. The flight was cancelled 45 minutes later and customers were given the option of a refund or a different flight.
A Spirit Airlines representative said the plane has since returned to service.
