PORTLAND, Ore. - Some Occupy Portland protesters returned to Chapman and Lowndsdale Squares Wednesday to help clean up the parks.

The protesters, members of Portland Parks and Recreation, and volunteers worked side by side to clear leaves.

It's been more than a month since police removed protesters from the two parks.

One of the protesters told KGW she wanted to send a message.

"For me, it's a way of saying thank you," said Sarah Hobbs. "You gave us the right to be out here. I want to give back, and help with the cleanup."

According to city estimates, cleaning up after that 38-day encampment will cost $85,000.
