PORTLAND – National Night Out was a success in the Portland Metro area Tuesday, with events scattered across the neighborhoods.
One of the biggest local celebrations was in East Portland where the non-profit group, Human Solutions threw a grand opening party at a renovated apartment complex for low-cost housing.
"Sometimes people think that low-income housing is full of crime. But low-income people don't want to live in environments that have a lot of crime. They want a safe place to live like this is," said Jean DeMaster, with Human Solutions.
National Night Out events were held across the country Tuesday night, as a way to bring neighborhoods together.
"Most importantly it's a chance to meet your neighbors. That's the most important part of National Night Out, is knowing your neighbors,” said John Scruggs with the Portland Police Bureau.
As for the apartment renovation project, it took three years to complete and cost $4.3 million which came, in part, from federal stimulus funds.
