PORTLAND -- Multnomah County's many libraries have switched to a six-day schedule due to budget cuts and now they will all be closed on Mondays.

In addition to closing on Mondays, each of the county's 19 libraries will be modifying their hours of service.

A new levy passed that renews funding for the library system starting in May, but even that wasn't enough to avoid some cutbacks. The new levy was approved by 80% of voters.

A group working to provide support for the libraries has scheduled several community meetings starting Monday night.  Results from the public input sessions will be shared with officials and a solution could be put up for vote in November, organizers said.

The Multnomah County Library system is the most widely used in the country outside of New York City with 16,000 daily users.
