PORTLAND – A man was injured Monday night after a fall down a Portland elevator shaft.

Rescue crews were called to the McDowell Bag Company on Southeast Madison Street at around 7:30 p.m. The man had fallen 20 feet down the shaft and firefighters used ropes and pulleys to pull him to safety.

He was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries to his back and wrists that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

The man was not identified by police.

Investigators have not said what they believe caused the fall.
