PORTLAND -- The budget of an after school program and other social services were spared cuts Thursday after a financial compromise with Multnomah County.

Some 100 supporters of the Sun Schools and other programs arrived as early as three hours before the Portland City Council meeting, expecting to make a passionate defenses of their services.

Instead, Mayor Charlie Hales and commissioners announced the budget rescue of Sun Schools, along with senior center funding, mental health crisis assessment, a domestic violence center and a needle exchange program.

Still left out were cuts faced by Buckman Pool and an anti-sex trafficking program.

The council plans two more budget sessions, this Saturday and next Thursday.
