PORTLAND - The Trail Blazers' 22-year-old Damian Lillard has emerged as the best rookie in the NBA.
The NBA announced that Lillard has won the Western Conference Rookie of the month for January. Lillard has now won the award all three months this season.
Damian is averaging 18 points, three rebounds and six assists per game.
He has delivered a number of great moments this season including the game winning shot back in December when the Blazers beat New Orleans 95-94. Damian hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
“I think after I got the game-winner against New Orleans, I had a bunch of texts after that game. I was excited because I had a couple of chances to win games for us, but I didn',t so to hit that first one it felt good,” he said.
It also feels good for Lillard to play in Salt Lake City against the Jazz, less than an hour from where Damian went to College at Weber St. in Ogden, Utah.
“They've been supporting me since I was 17 years old,” Lillard said at practice on Thursday, “I think they're all excited about me being in the NBA, coming back and playing there, so I expect a lot of people to come.
Seven of the Blazers next eight games are on the road, including stops in Orlando, Miami and New Orleans. Lillard likes playing in the different NBA arenas around the country.
“Every time we play a team on the road, I'm excited to see what the arena looks like when I get there and now that I'm playing in them they look different on TV to me, because I know what they look like when I'm in there.”
The fans know what Damian looks like when they see him -- the rookie of the month, again and again.
