PORTLAND -- William Gray wanted to take his date someplace special for her 16th birthday.
His dad told him, take her to the brand new Heathman Hotel on Broadway in downtown Portland.
That was 70 years ago. Monday night, Mr. and Mrs. William and Adele Gray Jr., came back for dinner, to celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary.
In 1940, William, now 88, saved up for dinner. The menu listed filet mignon at $1.10, a T-bone $1.25.
Adele, now 86, borrowed a fancy outfit from her sister, including long white gloves. She recalled that the Heathman waiter poured her the first glass of wine to pass her lips.
