Have you downloaded the new iPhone iOS 7 operating system?

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple released its new iPhones and iOS 7 operating system this week.

Apple's first round of stock of the new iPhone 5S was already sold out in many Apple Stores Friday. In the Portland metro area, Apple stores reportedly ran out of all 5S phones by noon.

For those who plan on buying or already bought a new iPhone, here's what to expect.

Apple's new iPhone 5S and 5C and last year's iPhone 5 are alike in many ways. All three phones have a touch screen measuring 4 inches diagonally, with a resolution of 326 pixels per inch.

That pixel density is better than Apple's iPads, though not as good as Samsung Electronic Co.'s flagship Galaxy S4.

Story: Long lines don't discourage local iPhone fans

The iPhone 5 and 5S are identical in size and weight, while the 5C is slightly bigger and heavier.

The iPhone 5S is identical in price to what the iPhone 5 cost when it was introduced last year, while the 5C is $100 cheaper.

Battery life is comparable. Talk time is boosted on the 5C and 5S, as is Internet use over LTE cellular connections. Video playback and Internet use over Wi-Fi remain the same.

Like all previous models, the battery on the new phones can be replaced only by service personnel.

The main differences: The 5S has a fingerprint sensor, a better camera and a faster processor, while the 5C comes in five colors and uses plastic instead of aluminum and glass for its casing.

As for the new operating system, iOS 7, experts say it's a major upgrade.

"This is the first big thing that (Apple chief executive) Tim Cook has implemented, which puts all the software and hardware design under one roof, to have a unified experience across products," said Gerry Purdy, analyst and consultant with Compass Intelligence.

The new mobile operating system became available Wednesday, providing users of iPhones and iPads a bolder look, which may be a shock for some, but which Apple hopes will keep its fans happy and draw new customers.

The iPhone 5S and the 5C went on sale Friday, while the iPhone 5 was discontinued.
