BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A Whitford Middle School teacher is accused of harassing a student in class Thursday morning.

School principal Aaron Persons said the incident involved unwanted physical contact with a student during first period band class. He said no injuries were reported.

On Thursday, band teacher Larry Coates, 40, was booked into the Washington County Jail on two counts of harassment. He was released on his own recognizance Thursday night.

"We have a hands-off policy when it comes to if a student needs to leave the classroom or something of that nature," Beaverton School District spokeswoman Maureen Wheeler said Friday. "We are not going to be interacting with them and shouldn't have hands on our students."

Investigators said the contact was not sexual in nature.

Coates is expected to appear in Beaverton Municipal Court on April 16. He was placed on administrative leave, Persons said.
