PORTLAND -- The OSU Beavers made it four straight wins over the Ducks this season with a 2-1 victory at PGE Park Wednesday night.
Stefen Romero went two for three with an RBI single in the fifth inning to give Oregon State a 2-0 lead.
Five Beavers pitchers held Oregon to just one run and four hits on the night. Kevin Rhoderick pitched the final inning for his fourth save of the season.
“It feels great,” said Romero, “Coming out, great atmosphere here at PGE Park, we just got it done today.”
Beavers Coach Pat Casey was ejected from the game in the sixth inning after OSU’s Tyler Smith was going to bunt, but was hit with a pitch.
The first base umpire ruled that Smith made an offer on the ball and it was a strike. Casey was upset and gave first base umpire Scott Letendre an earful.
“I got thrown out when I was two steps out of the dugout.” said Casey. “He interpreted that was questioning balls and strikes. I just wanted to know the communication. The plate umpire was standing at home plate. He has a great view of what happened. He sends him to first base and they ask an appeal, and from 110 feet away he changes the call."
The game lasted more than four hours including a 36 minute rain delay for the 8,487 fans.
The Ducks were ranked 21st in the country and the loss made them 37-20 on the season.
Oregon State was 29-21 and 4-1 against Oregon this season with all four wins coming by just one run.
“It’s tough, “ said Ducks 3rd baseman J.J. Altobelli adding “one play could go either way and that’s how things have been in the series and that’s kind of what you expected out of a rivalry series.”
Both teams were to finish the regular season this weekend. The Ducks will host California in Eugene and the Beavers will take on Arizona in Corvallis.
