Poll:
Would you support bringing Major League Baseball to Portland?

PORTLAND – A new effort is under way to bring major league baseball to Portland. But two major hurdles stand in the way.

A group that includes Barry Smith and Lynn Lashbrook of Sports Management Worldwide hopes to build a stadium where Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum now stands.

The new stadium would extend over Interstate Avenue, down toward the grain silos on the banks of the Willamette River. That project would also include a restoration of the riverfront there, to make it part of the Eastbank Esplanade.

Smith said consultants who've worked on stadiums across the country loved the proposed site when they toured it.

One problem: The coliseum is on the National Register of Historic Places, giving it some protection from redevelopment.

The other sticking point: There’s no Major League Baseball team in Portland.

Smith said he hopes to discuss both matters with MLB executives at winter meetings, starting in December.
