ALOHA, Ore. -- An Aloha homeowner held an intruder at bay with a baseball bat until deputies arrived to arrest the man Tuesday morning, police said.

Deputies were called at about 2 a.m. to the report of a burglary in the 9700 block of Southwest Clark Hill Road, said Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The homeowner told KGW he couldn't sleep and was in his living room reading when a man started kicking and pounding his back door.

The man eventually smashed a window and entered the house. The homeowner then grabbed a baseball bat and forced him to the floor.

Deputies arrived moments later and apprehended the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Hector Cruz of Las Vegas.

Investigators said Cruz was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He was arrested for assault, burglary and criminal mischief.

The homeowner was cut by the broken glass on his floor, but otherwise suffered no injuries, Ray said.
