SILVERTON, Ore. -- A fire near Silverton Sunday afternoon destroyed a home and workshop and killed two pets, officials said.

Crews were called at about 3 p.m. to the report of a brush fire in the 16000 block of Haven Acres Road NE, according to Silverton Fire District Capt. Ed Grambusch.

The fire had spread to the house and shop by the time the first crew arrived, and it was threatening nearby homes, Grambusch said.

Nearly 60 firefighters from 13 agencies were called in to help extinguish the fire. Three of them suffered heat exhaustion and another was treated at Silverton hospital for minor injuries.

"The home belonged to a family of two who was not home at the time of the fire," Grambusch added. "Unfortunately two family pets, a dog and bird, died in the blaze."

The home and shop were considered total losses. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
