Holiday travel expected to decline

04:39 PM PDT on Friday, June 27, 2008

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- AAA estimates that for the first time this decade, the number of Americans traveling for the Fourth of July holiday period will drop.

AAA said Friday that it projects more than 40 million Americans will still travel 50 miles or more from home but that is down 1.3 percent from last year.

Gas prices and a lackluster economy are being blamed. Oregon's average for regular unleaded is $4.29 a gallon, up from $3.07 this time last year.
