Crater Lake Road finally set to open
02:55 PM PDT on Friday, June 20, 2008
CRATER LAKE, Ore. (AP) -- You can tell that summer has arrived in Oregon -- enough snow is off the north entrance to Crater Lake National Park that travelers can get through.

The road traditionally opens late, after the park shrugs off the mantle of snow that can cover it with more than 200 inches in a winter. Most visitors arrive through the park's south entrance, which opens sooner.
Park officials said Friday that several feet of snow still covers much of the park, but the lodge, dining room, gas station and restaurant are open.
Park officials warn visitors should be wary of unsafe conditions where snow still remains, especially at many overlooks along the park's Rim Drive.
