High winds topple semi-trucks in Eastern Oregon

High winds were the latest winter threat in the Northwest Friday as new storms rolled in.
Wind gusts powerful enough to blow over semi-trucks forced the closure of an 82-mile stretch of Interstate-84 Friday morning, ODOT officials said.
As of 9 a.m., at least three semi-trucks and one motorhome had been toppled, according to officials with the Oregon Department of Transportation. Other big rig drivers were warned to pull over and wait out the storm.

A state trooper said blowing debris shattered his windshield and visibility was extremely poor; in some areas he could only see as far as 200 feet ahead.

The I-84 closure stretched between Hermiston, at the junction of Oregon Highway 207, and La Grande. At 10:30, the roadway was partially reopened.
“The closure is due to extremely high winds and low visibility. Weather reports call for high winds throughout the day. No estimates for opening the route are available at this time,” said Tom Strandberg with ODOT.
The eastbound lanes of I-84 were also briefly closed between La Grande at milepost 265 and milepost 272, when a semi-truck slid and blocked the freeway.
Motorists needing updates on the road conditions may call 5-1-1 or (800) 977-6368 in Oregon, or (503) 588-2941 outside Oregon for updated information on this closure.
