A Clackamas County jury on Thursday convicted Dale and Shannon Hickman of second degree manslaughter in the death of their newborn son.
The Hickmans, who belong to a church that rejects medical care, didn't take their son to a hospital, even though he was born two months premature. The boy died of respiratory failure within hours.
The Hickmans are scheduled to be sentenced next month. They face no more than 18 months in prison, due to a religious exemption to Oregon sentencing guidelines that was repealed after their indictment.
Without the exemption, 2nd degree manslaughter carries a minimum 6 year, 3 month sentence.
What do you think is an appropriate sentence for the Hickmans?
