The New Plan

My days are a'changin'.  There's a new plan in town.

The other day my boss brought me into his office for a meeting.  He always starts them out the same way.

tap tap.

"Steph, do you have a second to come to my office?"

And I don't know why, but that tap tap always makes me panic that I've done something horribly wrong, even though you'd think I'd know if I'd screwed up that bad.  Anyway.

I walked into his office and my other boss walked in behind me and closed the door.

great. what did i do?

"Steph, we'd like you to return to the health beat."

phew. really? okay.

He wants me to get back involved with health reporting, which is great great great great because I love it.  I really do.  It's such a wonderful, interesting, impactful beat.  The only drawback is the lack of time I have in my day.  And, for the first time in my career, I'm not sure how I'm going to make it all work.

I start work at 11am.  I have to have a health story on the air by 5pm.  Daily.  So, I'll get into work, make some calls to try and set something up if the assignment desk can't help, fly out the door to shoot interviews and video, run back and log the tape, write it, maybe get a lunch (who am I kidding), 'front it' at 5pm and then write a different version for 6pm.  Then I have that little thing I do at 7.  Yeah.  Live @ 7.  I need to have more than 10 minutes for show prep.  And, somewhere in there I need to have time to work my beat.  That's the only way you drill down into the good stories.  Otherwise it's the low hanging fruit.  See my dilemma?

So, the blog may take the back burner.  We'll see.  Twitter is easy since I can do it from my phone and it takes seconds.  But I'm going to have to relearn my time management.  I'm not stressed about it, though, because it's really quite simple; I'll either work it out or I won't.  All I can do is try my best.
