Police in Salem are warning wi-fi users to secure their systems with password protection after a registered sex offender was found using a laptop in a South Salem neighborhood to access porn.

Dispatchers sent officers Abe Dedek and Jim Aguilar to the neighborhood Monday after a complaint that a car had parked in the area several times and that the driver was using the laptop.
The officers spotted the car and realized there was porn on the laptop screen. The officers also noted that no external device was being used for an internet connection. Police then learned that there was an unsecured wi-fit site nearby.
Sean Thompson, 27, was accused of four counts of theft of services.
Polie caution that wi-fi system operaters need to know that unsecured sites can be used for crimes, and that investigators will first come after the registered owner of the site.
