PORTLAND -- U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley's campaign announced Friday that he has accepted invitations to two debates with opponent Dr. Monica Wehby in October.

But it was not yet clear whether Wehby would attend.

"Voters in Oregon will face a critical decision in the November election," said Merkley campaign manager Alex Youn. "And they deserve to hear directly from the candidates about where they stand on important issues."

KGW TV and news partner The Oregonian have offered to host a debate in Portland. The date is yet to be determined, but it would take place in mid- to late October.

"This is an opportunity for Oregonians to learn more about Senator Merkley's well-established record of fighting for our middle class and putting Oregon's priorities first, and will give Dr. Wehby a chance to defend her Republican agenda for our state," Youn wrote in a letter to Wehby campaign manager Michael Antonopoulos.

The Wehby campaign has not said she will accept the invitations.

"The campaign has received several debate requests, which are being considered with regard to Dr. Wehby's availability this fall," reads a statement from the Wehby campaign. "Just as she did in the primary, Dr. Wehby will use these opportunities to better educate Oregon on her plan to help Oregon's flailing economy, which has only been made worse by the policies and ineffectiveness of career politician Jeff Merkley."

The other debate would be held in Medford and hosted by KOBI-TV on October 14 or 21.
