BARTON, Ore. – Fire crews extinguished a suspicious brush fire near Barton on Thursday afternoon, a Clackamas Fire spokesman said.

Witnesses told firefighters they saw someone start a fire near Highway 224 and Bakers Ferry Road and leave the area around 1 p.m., according to Clackamas Fire spokesman Brandon Paxton.

When firefighters arrived, they found about 1/8 of an acre of grass and brush burned and flames coming from the top of a large Douglas Fir tree.

Crews extinguished the fire in just over an hour. No one was hurt and no buildings were damaged.

The fire was the seventh brush fire in the area since July 15, Paxton said.

"It's very scary," said neighbor Shelby Kemper. "Really scary to think of the possibilities that can happen."

"It's very scary when you have little kids in the family," added neighbor Paula Booth.

Investigators were asking neighbors and business owners to report any suspicious activity to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office at 503-723-4949.
