CORBETT, Ore. -- Who would steal from a fire station? That is the question firefighters in rural Multnomah County are asking.

Some time last week a thief or thieves broke inside the Aims Fire Station, near Corbett, and stole $30,000 worth of life-saving equipment.

Of course, you're angry, said Chief Phil Dearixon. Mostly I'm confused.

The crooks got away with everything from bags full of medical supplies to a cardiac defibrillator and thermal imaging equipment.

It detects heat signatures so we can use this to search for someone in a smoke-filled atmosphere, said Dearixon.

The chief says the bad guys used the fire station's own tools to steal some of the equipment.

I'm shocked and Ifeel really bad for the volunteers who operate this as well as the people who depend on them, said Sister Krista Von Borstel, executive director of a nearby camp.

Fire crews have replaced a lot of the stolen equipment. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crime to call the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

We are taking extra security measures at the fire station because it is out of the way, said Dearixon.
