PORTLAND -- A Portland man died after crashing his motorcycle into a telephone pole on Northeast Cornfoot Road early Monday evening, police said.

The victim was identified Tuesday as 54-year-old Robert Carl Tilander, Jr. of Southeast Portland.

He was traveling eastbound on the motorcycle just after 5 p.m. when he lost control near Alderwood Road, west of the gate of the Portland Air National Guard Base, police said.

He was not affiliated with the base.

Investigators said they believe speed was a factor in the crash.
