PORTLAND -- A man threatening to jump from a tree closed downtown Portland streets Saturday morning.
The man was around 30 feet up a tree on Southwest 3rd Avenue and Ash Street when he threatened to jump around 9:15 a.m.
Officers and crisis negotiators went to assist the man, who police said appeared to be high on stimulants and perhaps suffering from a mental health crisis.
The crisis negotiation team was able to convince the man to climb down a ladder.
Surrounded by around 30 officers, the man ran around for a few seconds, seemingly trying to escape.
He then made a split decision to leap head-first into a waiting stretcher.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Southwest 1st to 3rd Avenues and Southwest Ankeny to Pine Streets were closed to traffic during the negotiation. Streets were reopened around noon.
