PORTLAND -- A suspect was arrested shortly after a woman reported a sexual assault just after noon Thursday in Southeast Portland's Lents Park.

Officers were dispatched to the park at 4727 SE 92nd Avenue and talked with the victim. She told them she had just met the suspect, who then assaulted her and ran eastbound out of the park, said Sgt. Pete Simpson.

She was able to provide a description along with a cellphone photo. The suspect was spotted nearby by police and taken into custody. The victim was taken to a hospital.

Michael J. Miranda, 28, was accused of two counts of second-degree sex abuse.

Simpson said stranger-to-stranger rapes are rare, but women should be prepared.

He said women should be familiar with the Sexual Assault Resource Center of Oregon and its 24-hour support line 503-640-5311.

The Portland Police Bureau WomenStrength and GirlStrength programs provide free classes and personal safety workshops to people throughout the Portland area.
