CHICAGO, IL. -- Officials at Chicago's Willis Tower said the popular tourist attraction is safe, even though a glass ledge jutting from the building's 103rd floor appeared to crack beneath a visiting family Wednesday.

It was the scare of a lifetime according to The Chicago Tribune, which reported:

For a few very long seconds, Alejandro Garibay thought the only thing between him and the street 103 stories below was the pane of glass quickly cracking as he sat on the Ledge on the side of Willis Tower.

The see-through glass bays are known as The Ledge and extend about four feet from the building, which was once called the Sears Tower. Officials say the family wasn't in danger, because it was just a protective coating covering the glass surface that cracked, not the glass itself.
