PORTLAND -- Tuesday morning, an auxiliary bishop was appointed to the Archdiocese of Portland, marking only the third time in Portland history this has occurred.

Pope Francis appointed the new bishop, Peter Leslie Smith, who currently serves as Vicar General and moderator of the the archdiocese's governing board, also called a Curia.

Auxiliary bishops traditionally assist and support the acting bishop, in this case, Bishop Alexander K. Sample who moved to Portland last year from the Catholic Diocese of Marquette, Mich..

Smith said he will continue with his current roles while also taking on the new job.

He also thanked his family and his time with Saint Vicent de Paul, doing refugee work in South Africa, for making him who he is today.
