TIGARD, Ore. -- A TriMet driver was assaulted outside Tigard's Washington Square Mall transit center after he attempted to take a picture a man vandalizing the bus Friday morning, police said.

The bus driver, 12-year-veteran Ivan Bissell, told police the man had used a small knife to cut several seats on the bus just before 7 a.m., said Jim Wolf of the Tigard Police Department.

Bissell said he was using his cell phone to take pictures of the damage when the suspect stole the phone and punched him. A witness reportedly tried to detain the suspect and was punched in the face.

The man then ran away into a neighborhood north of the mall, where a K-9 team found him hiding in blackberry bushes in someone's backyard, Wolf said.

The suspect, 34 year-old Michael Olivo of Portland, was jailed on several charges, including robbery, assault and menacing.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt.
