PORTLAND -- The southbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the Rose Quarter were reopened after closing Wednesday after a crane counterweight fell from a semi trailer, officials said.

The 40,000-pound counterweight fell off of the trailer just before 12:30 p.m., said spokesman Don Hamilton of the Oregon Department of Transportation. He estimated all lanes would be reopened by 2 p.m.

Crews closed the southbound lanes to remove the counterweight, but Hamilton said the ramp to eastbound Interstate 84 from Winning Way on-ramp would remain open during the work.
