SALEM -- A 20-year-old Salem man is accused of sexually abusing the 6-year-old daughter of an acquaintance, police said.

Senior Deputy Todd Bay arrested Mathew Jacob Gwyn Thursday afternoon at a home in the 1500 block of Madras Street Southeast, said Marion County Sheriff's Office spokesman Don Thomson.

Bay learned that the sexual contacts began in January but only surfaced recently when the daughter disclosed the events to her mother, Thomson said.

An investigator trained in interviewing young sexual victims assistance Bay in his investigation, Thomson added. At this time, there are no other known victims of Gwyn.

Gwyn was jailed on three counts of first-degree sex abuse. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.
