PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The upcoming visit by the Dalai Lama has excited the cities of Portland and Eugene, but it has electrified a tiny Buddhist college in southeast Portland.

Many Portlanders had not seen or heard the name Maitripa (my-tree-puh) College until an announcement that it was planning the visit by the Buddhist monk known as His Holiness.

School president and professor Yangsi Rinpoche (Reen-po-shay) said he approached the Dalai Lama about visiting Portland in 2006 and reminded him five years later.

The Dalai Lama will be in Oregon from May 9 until May 11, and has events planned at the University of Portland, the University of Oregon and Memorial Coliseum.

It will be his first visit to the state since 2001.
