PORTLAND TriMet announced plans for new security measures on MAX trains, buses and transit stops. The agency said the measures would include fare inspectors, K-9 teams and more cameras.

Last month, TriMet ended the Free Rail Zone in downtown Portland and the Lloyd District. Officers said since then, they have reported fewer problems with transients and a calmer climate, TriMet officials said, although no official surveys had been tallied.

We are now seeing citations dropping as riders have realized it s better to follow the rules than pay a fine, TriMet Operations Executive Director Shelly Lomax said.

The agency also received a grant from the Transportation Security Administration to add a new K-9 team.
