GRESHAM --A Gresham family can hardly believe how they got taken by a scam Friday. When they went to open their brand new TV, they were shocked by what they saw.
The price tag-almost nine hundred bucks, so when Sergio Casas made a deal with the guys selling TVs out of their van, he couldn't resist.
Two-hundred-fifty dollars in cash, yes, and I was supposed to go back for more. Oh my god, Casas said.
The TV was sealed up, with store and brand labels, but with no box. He thought that was strange.
It s just plywood nothing in there the size was right the packaging, everything made it look like a legit TV, he said.
It wasn t an LCD , or a plasma. It was plywood.
The remote was a cheap prop. The power supply was a simple extension cord.
I had a gut feeling I shouldn t have done it, he said.
With a baby on the way, and facing a tight budget, Sergio Casas says he let his desire for a deal get the best of him.
Sergio and his family say they called Gresham police to alert them. Police said besides warning people to stay away from deals like these, there's little they can do.
