SALEM, Ore. A fire at a Salem duplex started as three boys played with fireworks Tuesday night, according to investigators.

The fire spread in the structure at 4306 San Francisco Drive NE. around 8 p.m.

Investigators said the kids kicked lit fireworks into some nearby shrubs next to the complex. The shrubs caught fire which, in turn spread to the duplex.

Most of the fire damage was outside but smoke and water did cause some problems inside, too.

The resident of the duplex was not at home at the time of the fire.

The three boys ranged in age from 7 to 10-years old. The case was referred to the Marion County Juvenile Department for possible charges.
