VANCOUVER -- A lucky Vancouver girl walked out onto the pitch with Team USA before Sunday s FIFA World Cup match against Portugal.
Mallory Stonier, 9, was selected as part of a McDonald s Player Escort program that works with 1,400 kids around the world and connects them with professional teams, according to Michelle Safo of Davis Elen Advertising.
That was the best soccer game ever! Stonier said after Portugal and the U.S. played to a 2-2 draw.
Her dad said she cried tears of joy when she won, and then was nervous about going to the game.
I said just enjoy the moment, Brandon Stonier said. And I did remind her that during the national anthem she needs to put her hand over her heart and just enjoy it.
Mallory was one of 26 little soccer fans from across the country chosen to receive a free trip (with a parent or guardian) to Brazil and to escort U.S. players onto the field at the World Cup, Safo said.
The trip wasn't all about soccer, though. Mallory and her dad were able to take in the sights around Brazil, including a cruise on the Amazon River.
Mallory s trip to Brazil and back was being tracked on a special Facebook page.
