PORTLAND TriMet officials apologized to riders Wednesday after several days of MAX problems.

A big shutdown Monday ran from 11:30 a.m. through the afternoon commute, affecting traffic to the Rose Quarter during big Trail Blazer and Winterhawks games.

Then, on Tuesday, trains were delayed up to 15 minutes because of a switch malfunction just before 5 p.m., affecting commuter travel over the Steel Bridge.

TriMet executive Robert Nelson said crews were working to repair malfunctioning equipment recently installed on the Steel Bridge.

Its utilization is very high, Nelson said of Steel Bridge MAX traffic. But it needs focus and attention, and we re going to work on that.

He said TriMet was investing millions of dollars in system-wide improvements, as well as hiring more personnel.
