GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A wrong-way driver crashed on Interstate 5 near Grants Pass Tuesday morning and left the scene, police said.
The driver, 49-year-old Sergey Zhura of Grants Pass, was headed south in the northbound lanes when his van sideswiped a Toyota just before 6 a.m., said Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.
Zhura didn't stop at the scene, instead he turned his van around on the freeway and headed north, according to Hastings.
When a trooper spotted the van, Zhura attempted to flee, eventually pulling over after a six-mile chase, Hastings said.
After exiting the van, the driver refused the trooper's verbal commands and briefly resisted arrest before being taken into custody, Hastings added.
Zhura was taken to a nearby hospital for physical and mental evaluation. He was charged with reckless driving, hit-and-run, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
