STAYTON, Ore. -- Two people were killed and two were hospitalized after a head-on crash southwest of Salem Tuesday, police said.

A car headed west on Highway 22 near Stayton crossed the centerline and crashed into an eastbound SUV at about 7 p.m., said Senior Trooper Dan Swift of the Oregon State Police.

The driver of the car, 27-year-old Nicholas Adam Baker, and his passenger, 20-year-old Deza Rae Byro, both of Salem, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the other vehicle, 18-year-old Erin Long of Jefferson and 19-year-old Chelsie Anna Merrie Neeper of Aumsville, were taken to Santiam Hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash was being investigated.
