GRESHAM -- A funeral in a recent unsolved murder, and 11 gang-related shootings in the past 10 days, has officers ready for more violence.

The family gathered Tuesday to remember a young man lost to violence. Gresham police are looking to make an arrest after in the shooting death of 21-year-old Andreas Jones.

Police aren t the only ones looking to tackle recent violence, so is a grieving mother.

This is senseless violence. This is my baby. This is your brother. I don't need another mother in my shoes, said Kim Dixon McCleary, Jones mother.

McCleary made a passionate plea to friends and family of her son at a vigil Tuesday that precedes his funeral on Wednesday.

Jones was shot and killed in an area often patrolled by members of Portland police s East Metro Gang Enforcement Team. Gresham police work very closely with the Portland gang unit, which reported a slew of recent gang shootings.

You can see the areas on the Portland Gang Activity Map where the violence has recently popped up. Whether in Portland or Gresham, the response to an uptick in gang activity is the same.

So we go out and we start kicking rocks. We start stopping all the gangsters, talking to them, seeing what the word on the street is, and getting information from them, said Sgt. Bill Smith with the Gresham Police Department.

Violence has been trending down this year. Gang-related shootings are significantly down compared to last year.

Jones funeral in Portland will see a heavy police presence Wednesday.
