PORTLAND The U.S. Navy has canceled its annual appearance at Portland s Rose Festival Fleet Week. Officials blamed the federal sequestration.

Earlier, the Navy announced the Blue Angels would cancel their performance at July s Oregon Air Show in Hillsboro.

Appearances atSeattle's SeaFair were also canceled.

We appreciate the community's understanding during these uncertain budgetary times, Navy Region Northwest Commander Rear Adm. Mark Rich said. We will continue to find ways to engage locally, in keeping with Department of Defense guidance. We are thankful for what Seattle, Portland, and our community partners do to support our service men and women every day and look forward to continuing to work with those partners now, and in the future.

Fleet Week annually showcases a handful of Navy and U.S. CoastGuard vessels as they navigate up the WillametteRiver to downtown Portland. The ships dock at Portland's sea wall and are a magnet for Rose Festival visitors.

Last year: Rose Fleet week begins

Usually between one and six boats arrive. Naval officials said Canadian navy vessels and the CoastGuard ships were still scheduled to arrive between June 1 and June 6.

Sailors also enjoy shore leave in Portland's Waterfront Park carnival and throughout the city.

The Navy said it intended to continue Fleet Weeks in the future as the budget situation permits.
