EUGENE The University of Oregon Ducks named redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota starting quarterback for Sept. 1 season opener vs. Arkansas State at Autzen Stadium, head coach Chip Kelly announced Friday.

The 6-foot-4, 211-pound Honolulu native is the Ducks first freshman to start Oregon s season opener since Danny O Neil did in 1991 against Washington State.

The team was set to work out Saturday morning.

The team said Mariota edged sophomore Bryan Bennett for the starting berth.
