PORTLAND -- A phishing scam that has already hit victims across the country is now happening in the Portland area.

Customers have been receiving calls from scammers, claiming the bank lost their personal information.

We have been informed by a number of our customers in the last two days that they have received automated calls asking them for personal identification information, Wells Fargo spokesman Tom Unger said Saturday. These calls are fraudulent and customers should ignore them.

Unger said the scam affects people at random. Callers usually pretend to be representatives from banks with large customer bases, such as Wells Fargo, to increase their chances of actually reaching customers.

KGW has received numerous calls and emails from customers and non-customers who've been contacted in the Portland area, many of whom said the calls came from the 214 area code. Others said the calls were private or anonymous.

Any suspicious request for personal information should be verified, Unger said.

Customers should use a legitimate source to confirm the request by calling the number listed on their bank's website, billing statement or on the back of their debit or credit card, he added. Consumers should never share their mother's maiden name, Social Security Number, bank account numbers, account user names or passwords with anyone.
