HILLSBORO -- Taylor Bonawitz kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime as Sherwood defeated Marist 26-23 in the OSAA Class 5A state football championship game Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.

Sherwood (13-0) set the stage for Bonawitz's game-winner by recovering a Marist fumble in overtime. The Bowmen then drove to the 8-yard line, where on fourth down they turned to Bonawitz.

It was Sherwood's first state title.

Steven Long had 15 carries for 217 yards and two touchdowns to lead Sherwood. The Bowmen had 378 yards offense, all on the ground.

Marist (13-1) lost for the first time in 26 games. All of the Spartans' offense came from quarterback Logan Silver, who had 43 carries for 221 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 159 yards and another touchdown.

Sherwood took a 16-3 halftime lead, but Marist was able to force overtime by scoring 20 points during the fourth quarter.
