PORTLAND A world-record tree hugging attempt in Portland Saturday was unsuccessful.

Between 1,000 and 2,000 tree huggers were expected at Washington Park s Hoyt Arboretum for the event, which organizers hoped would set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of simultaneous tree huggers.

Last year, the group set a record with 936 tree huggers, but a larger attempt by a group in Nepal threatened that record.

Saturday's event recorded 599 huggers, far less than the 2,000 needed to set a new record. Still, event organizers said the city showed its support for the trees.

Portlanders love trees and they want to show it, said Jenny DuVander of Friends of the Trees.
