WOODBURN, Ore. -- A Gervais man was struck and killed while walking on Interstate 5 two miles north of Woodburn, according to Oregon State Police.
At approximately 5:50 a.m., Joseph Lee Locke was driving a red SUV when he pulled the vehicle over on the northbound shoulder of I-5. The man then got out and began to walk onto the freeway, police said.
A commercial sanitation truck, moving to avoid the driver, sideswiped Locke, according to police.
When officers arrived on the scene, Locke was found dead in the right northbound lane.
Initial investigation indicates the pedestrian intentionally moved into the truck's path resulting in the death of the 50-year-old man, said a spokesman for Oregon State Police.
All lanes were blocked for around 15 minutes. Lanes were fully reopened by 10 a.m.
OSP troopers were continuing to investigate the incident.
