VICTORIA, B.C. -- The Portland Winterhawks (27-12-2-3) picked up a 2-1 win in Victoria against the Royals (29-15-0-2) in the second game of a back-to-back set.
Brendan Leipsic struck early for the Hawks, scoring 2:46 into the game in what would be the lone goal of the period, as the Hawks took a 1-0 lead into the second.
The Hawks then more than doubled Vancouver s shot total in the second period with an 11-5 advantage, but it remained 1-0 heading into the third.
Victoria evened the game at the 12:49 mark of the third on a power play goal from Jordan Fransoo, but just over two minutes later Oliver Bjorkstrand ripped a one-timer on a power play past Royals netminder Coleman Vollrath to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. From there the Hawks slammed the door to finish with the win.
Brendan Burke returned from injury and was terrific in net for the Hawks, stopping 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Vollrath allowed two goals on 35 Portland shots.
Portland was 1-4 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks wrap up their four-gam;e road trip tomorrow in Vancouver against the Giants at 5 p.m.
