SALEM -- The Oregon Parole Board Tuesday denied parole for inmate Sidney Dean Porter, who killed an Oregon police officer in 1992.

John Day police officer Frank Ward was murdered while responding to a domestic violence call at Porter's house. Porter killed Ward with his bare hands and with a piece of firewood.

Porter promised during last month's parole board hearing that would never turn violent again. He also said he didn't remember the night of the murder because he had been drinking.

The county attorney argued that Porter is still a huge threat to society and cannot be trusted to remain nonviolent.

Tuesday the board issued an order to defer his projected release date until June 7, 2015. Another hearing was scheduled in February 2015.
